Presence From the Past - Part 2

Defined by PillarsDefined by Pillars

The entrance stairs and foyer are open to the living area and the dining room. Pillars define and separate the three areas. The dining room ceiling is 9 feet high and features a two-tier tray. The foyer and living area ceilings span the full two stories. Easy-care slate tiles cover the floor in the entry, and wall-to-wall carpet softens the dining and living areas.

An angled opening between these two semiformal rooms leads to the casual, country-style family living areas. This great-room portion of the house is warmed by a German beechwood floor and includes a large family area, breakfast nook, and hardworking kitchen. A vaulted ceiling above the family room portion makes the 18x23-foot area feel even larger. Ceilings elsewhere in the great-room are 10 feet high. Stairs adjacent to the breakfast area lead to the media room and upstairs family area/playroom, and are convenient to three of the bedrooms. "The stairs in this area are the ones your children come down in their pajamas," Meyer says.

Behind the stairs, a 12x12-1/2-foot utility room houses the laundry center. Ample counter space can be put to work as a potting area or workshop. "There is also a shower in this room so you can wash the dog or clean up after working in the yard," Bienz says.

The kitchen features a triangular work core with a professional range built into a roomy angled island, a built-in professional refrigerator and freezer, and a double sink. A second sink in the island provides ample room for a second cook or a caterer. There are two walk-in pantries: One stores dry goods; the other serves as a wet bar/butler's pantry and is used for serving refreshments and displaying and storing china and linens.
