What you should know about allergies

What you should know about allergiesAn allergy is your body's reaction to something called an allergen

If you have allergies or asthma
Naturally, you should discuss your allergies or asthma with your health care provider. Studies show that allergy patients with mild to moderate asthma can take certain over-the-counter and prescription drugs without worsening their asthma symptoms.

The best way to treat allergies is to stay away from the things you are allergic to, such as dust, mold and pollen. If you are allergic to dust mites and mold, reducing the amount of dust as well as controlling mold growth in your home can help. Cleaning your carpet with traditional-wet methods may cause serious health problems with asthmatics or those who have moderate to serious allergies. Talk to your doctor about what you are specifically allergic to and how you can begin to control the amount of allergens in your home. Print this page and our Index page and present them to your doctor for professional medical advise.

Your health care provider may recommend medicine to relieve your allergy symptoms. Be sure to always follow instructions when taking allergy medications. Ask your doctor about Zyrtec® cetirizine HCI (Zyrtec® 5-mg and 1--mg tablets and 1 mg/mL syrup). Pfizer U.S. Pharmaceuticals.

Allergy shots
Allergy shots are given over a period of months to slowly help your body stop reacting to allergens.

Contact your doctor
Your doctor is the best source of information and advice to identify your allergies and to start a treatment program that makes sense for you.

Some medical terms that you should know

Allergic rhinitis
A general term that describes the various symptoms allergies cause, such as runny nose, watery eyes, sneezing and itching.

Seasonal allergic rhinitis
A more specific term for symptoms caused by seasonal allergens, such as tree, grass, or weed pollens. The season and weather affects the amount of pollen in the air at any one time. Some people may be allergic to just one type of tree pollen or to ragweed, while others may be allergic to a variety of pollens from trees, grasses and/or weeds.

Perennial (or year-round) allergic rhinitis
This term describes allergies that cause symptoms throughout the year. Many of the things that cause year-round symptoms are found in the home. A major indoor allergen is dust mites--microscopic organisms found in ordinary household dust. Animal dander from dogs, cats and other pets with fur, as well as molds found in damp, humid areas like the bathroom or basement can also be problematic for people with allergies. Can you imagine the ill-effects of water left to dry in carpeting? SWEDRY™ Carpet Cleaning should be discussed with your health care provider. We recommend that you print this page and our Index Page and give them to your doctor. You may also hyperlink to for further information.

Atopic dermatitis (eczema)
An itchy rash that usually occurs in the creases of your arms, legs and neck, although it can cover your entire body. This condition is often associated with allergies and food may be an important cause of the problem.

Contact dermatitis
Red, itchy, hot skin caused by contact with things like plants, cosmetics, medicines, metals, and chemicals. The most common cause of contact dermatitis is poison ivy.

Urticaria or hives
This is an outbreak of red swollen areas on the skin. Most of the time the exact cause is not known. However, sometimes the cause can be traced to foods like nuts, peanuts, milk, eggs, shellfish, and berries, and to medicines like penicillin and aspirin. Consult your health care professional for medical advise.
