SURROUNDING ABOVE-GROUND POOLS
Surrounding Above-Ground Pools

Introduction

Above-ground pools are less expensive than in-ground pools. As much as manufacturers try, however, these pools tend to be ugly. A raised deck surrounding the pool can offset its bold presence somewhat by offering a more graceful transition between surfaces. A deck can provide more of the appearance and convenience of an in-ground pool. It also hides and protect the pool's plumbing and filtering equipment.

A deck surround makes the pool easier to use and, thus, more fun. Make the platform large enough for patio furniture, so you can sunbathe and perhaps dine between dips.

If possible, use a deck to connect the pool with the house entrance. In most cases, this will require some level changes to account for the different heights of the pool and doorway. Otherwise, build a free-standing structure with a set of stairs.

A wood deck gives you easy access to your pool or spa.
Taking the plunge

One of the challenges of building a deck around an above-ground pool is to provide safe access to the edge of the pool while keeping the deck structurally separate. Use bracing for added support against swaying. Decide whether you want the decking to be below or above the level of the pool's rim and keep wood surfaces about an inch away from the pool.

Developing a framing plan

A common approach to framing a pool surround is to place footings and posts around the perimeter of the pool, spaced at even intervals around the curved parts. Then attach doubled joists to the beams so at all points they come close enough to the pool to support decking hanging over the pool. You may need to fill in some places with short, bevel-cut joists. Run the other joists up to the doubled joists. Some pieces must be cut at odd bevels. Build the rest of the framing as you would a standard deck. Install the decking so it overhangs the edge of the pool, then cut the decking to match the arc of the pool. Sand all the curve-cut edges smooth.
