PATCHING ASPHALT CRACKS
Patching Asphalt Cracks

Introduction

Asphalt paving is made by mixing asphalt with gravel. Because asphalt paving is softer than concrete, it has enough plasticity to ride out minor heaves and settling. When a crack or pothole does appear, you can patch it with a mix sold by the bag or by combining asphalt sealer and sand.

Try to patch asphalt when the temperature is 60 degrees or higher. Asphalt is brittle when cold. If you must work in cool weather, store the compound indoors in a warm place. Break up any lumps by walking on the bag before opening it.

Asphalt is easy to patch, but an annual application of sealer can minimize problems.
Asphalt paving needs sealing every two years or so -- whenever the surface becomes checked with hairline cracks or dries out. To do the job, buy 5-gallon buckets of sealer and apply as shown on the last page.

Beware of promoters who offer to seal your drive for a cut-rate price. Their sealers usually disappear as fast as they do.

Filling minor cracks

For cracks in asphalt up to 1/8 inch wide, partially fill crack with sand and pour in a liquid sealer.

Fixing larger cracks

For larger cracks, mix sand with sealer, making a paste. Pack mixture into crack with a putty knife or trowel.

Sealing the asphalt

Seal asphalt regularly. Pour out sealer and work it into the surface with an asphalt sealer broom. Apply two coats.
