Striping
Whether you want formal, tailored stripes, or fun, funky stripes, low-tack painter's tape makes striping your walls easy.
What you need:
- low-tack painter's tape in the desired widths
- wall paint in two colors
- credit card or similar piece of plastic
- paintbrushes
- level or plumb bob
- hard lead pencil
1. Using one paint color, apply your base coat; let dry. Starting at one end of the wall, use a level to help you pencil in a plumb line. Determine the width of your stripes and mark that on a wooden scrap or a paint stick.
2. Stretch your tape along the plumb line. Press it to the wall and seal the edges by burnishing them with a credit card.

3. Using the wooden scrap or paint stick to determine the distance, mark the other edge of your stripe. Then, tape off that edge in the same way. Continue in this manner until the entire wall is marked.
4. Paint the exposed sections with your second paint color to form your stripes. To create alternating narrow and wide stripes, use narrow and wide painter's tape. To create two wide stripes, paint only every other stripe.
