MENDING SPLIT DRYWALL TAPE
Mending Split Drywall Tape

Introduction

Drywall edges are bridged with paper tape set in a bed of joint compound. Sometimes the tape will loosen, particularly in humid areas like bathrooms. Use the technique described here to correct the problem. To prevent a recurrence, improve ventilation in the room.

1. Trim edges

Use a sharp knife to make a clean break at the edges, then carefully pull away the loose tape.

2. Apply joint compound

Apply joint compound, position new tape, then smooth bubbles with light, vertical strokes of the knife.

3. Finish

Apply compound over tape right away. Let dry, then coat again, feather out the edges, and sand.
